I'd like some opinions on the use of 110v AC power tools conected to a power inverter on a vehicle.  I purchased an Alligator at the Black & Decker outlet store while my wife was visiting the other stores.  The Alligator is  a combination loper/chain saw that will grip and cut through up to a four inch branch/log.  Power draw is 4.5 amps.

I hate using gasoline powered portable equipment because of its wight and because my arms are tired just by the time I get the things started.  On the other hand, I really hate winding up 100 feet or 150 feet of extension cord after I've done as much work as my arm strength will allow me to complete.

If I could use the Alligator and my other AC power tools using only a 25 foot cord connected to my Jeep, I probably would do more work more often.  Don't even mention tangled cords.

Now to my question: Can 110 volt AC power tools be used efficiently for an extended period (several hours) while connected to a power inverter in a vehicle with a running motor and fully functional alternator?  The power inverter I currently have installed will have to upgraded if this type of usage is a possibility.

You'd be putting an additional strain on that stock alternator of yours.

To answer your question, I'd say as long as your power inverter can handle the load you can short term. Long term this extra load will eventually wear out your alternator. Todays alternator ratings are peak amperage not sustained. Just because an alternator is rated at 105 amps does not mean it can handle putting out 105 amps continually.

This set up REALLY, REALLY worked well for the approximately 45 minute period (not continuous) that I used it.
